Russian Library
(JRL) was originated in the beginning of 1991 being based on the voluntary
"in kind" donations made by immigrants of various generations. After the first 5 years of JRL activity,
with the organizational and financial support provided by Zionist
Forum of Soviet Jewry, library
stocks amounted to 40,000 books, albums, magazines, and newspapers. The
circulation department, the reading room, and the mathematical library
were opened in the building of Zionist Forum. The number of permanent readers
amounted to 4,000 persons. In 1995 the new, large reading room,
as well as Department of Rare Books, Department of Human Rights Literature,
and Art Library were opened in the building of Immigrants' Communities
House (Jerusalem Municipality
Department of Absorption). The
total library stocks amounted to 70,000 items; the number of readers exceeded
6,000 persons. Archive of Russian Jewry was formed, in collaboration with
Jerusalem Municipality and Zionist Forum Library. Jerusalem
Russian Library
contributed to the foundation of other Russian libraries in many Israeli
cities. At present there are 42 such libraries including those, which were
originated in various cultural centers, schools and other educational institutions.
